ACTION
Mission
Action of Greater Lansing is a non-profit community organization that fights for fairness and justice in the Greater Lansing area. The organization is comprised of 13 diverse institutional members that take direct action with local decision makers on major issues of community concern. The organization is locally driven and takes action through an organized 3-step annual cycle of listening, research, and direct action.
Past Accomplishments
- Convinced Chief Mark Alley from the Lansing Police Department to fund and implement the Hot Spot Card, an anonymous crime reporting tool. Cards are placed in public locations throughout the community and provide citizens a way to report crimes without fear of retribution. Action receives the cards with the complaints, delivers them to the police department, and follows up to ensure accountability from the police.
- Moved the Ingham County Commission to create a task force of key individuals to design a Jail to Community Reentry Program in the Ingham County jail. The program will work to identify needs of the highest repeat jail offenders and will pair the offenders with community resources before their release. A similar program has been successful in other communities such as Calhoun County, MI to reduce repeat offense rates and lower the jail population. The program is slated to begin in the fall of 2008.
Year End Report
On May 18, 2008, Action received commitments from Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero to crack down on the high number of unregistered rentals in the city of Lansing. Unregistered rentals are directly connected with the high number of 'red tagged' properties that are closed due to blatant code violations. Closing code violated homes also causes 3 people a day in the city of Lansing to become temporarily homeless. The city of Lansing will reinforce a requirement for rental properties to post rental and code compliance status and will also provide public web access of code compliance information on rental properties in the city of Lansing.
