Welcome, future organizers
My name is John Calkins. I am the Executive Director of the DART Center.
I think I speak for everyone here at DART when I say, we welcome your
interest and invite you to apply now for our four month, fulltime, paid
community organizing training program known as the DART Organizers
Institute. We encourage your interest because I have no doubt that those
who follow through will have a tremendous impact on our communities.
Anyone can see that injustice takes many forms in our nation’s
cities. When we take a close look we see healthcare for the few,
unacceptable levels of crime and substance abuse, inequitable education
within our public schools, lack of affordable housing, absence of jobs
that pay enough to support a family, unfair treatment of new immigrants,
and countless others. These things rightfully make us angry.
However, simply getting angry doesn’t mean things will change.
Using strategies and techniques taught by our trainers, graduates of the
DART Organizers Institute have organized people to hold political and
economic systems accountable and won important victories on a broad set
of justice issues. This is where you come in.
If you like working with people, facing challenges and winning, watching
folks build real power, reflecting on the meaning of life, defeating
injustice, and being involved in something more meaningful than
“just a job”, then I invite you to explore the DART
Organizers Institute as the beginning to a career in organizing.
We typically receive hundreds of applications each year, but we
carefully consider each and every candidate who applies. To get started,
we encourage you to apply online today because the earlier you apply,
the better. Thank you once again for your interest. I hope to meet you
at one of our final interview events this spring.
Sincerely,
John Calkins
